Wolves of West Coast Canada |
The wolf seen on Vancouver Island is a subspecies of the grey wolf, endemic to the area. It is very social, and lives in packs of about five to thirty-five. The wolves, however will hunt alone or with the pack depending on the size of prey. It is a very shy animal, rarely being seen by humans. Wolves on the West Coast of the Island (Tofino and Ucluelet) have been known to kill unguarded domestic dogs. The wolf is either fully grey in color, or fully white and is of a medium size. They feed on the abundance of black tailed deer on the island, as well as the big Roosevelt Elk most commonly found in the Courtney/Comox area. |
